We're looking for a Product Designer to join Cathedral, working across client projects and our own software.

About Cathedral

Cathedral is a design and technology studio grounded in brand strategy, working with frontier technology products to design solutions at pace. We build websites, digital products, custom software solutions, and AI workflows.

We take the time to understand how a client's business works and how people use its products. That includes the practical details: how someone moves through a website, finds a document or completes a task. Those decisions are part of the design, alongside the typography, layout and visual identity. Today, anyone can prompt an AI-website, but the difference between bland and great is the brand strategy, the understanding how and where that product will be used, who will engage with it, and what the core value-proposition is. Getting this right still governs what a great User Experience looks like.

Lovable is central to how we work. We use it to develop ideas through working prototypes, from individual components to complete websites and product flows. Depending on the client's requirements, the finished product might stay in Lovable or be built in Framer, Ghost or another platform.

About the role

You'll work with Creative Principal, Michael, helping develop projects from the initial brief through to delivery. You will also lead smaller projects.

You'll be involved in understanding the problem, exploring possible approaches and producing the work.

This role needs someone with an eye for the little details. Alongside interfaces and user flows, you'll work on brand materials, social content and print. The role will require moving quickly from designing visual flows and layouts to creating prototypes and ready-to-go websites, while maintaining a high-quality finish.

You’ll learn and use the latest AI platforms. A key part of your role will be keeping the work visually consistent and aligned with each client’s brand strategy and guidelines.

What you'll work on

  1. 01

    Lumina Metals

Websites, investor information and brand communications for a dual-listed mining company with ambitions to become the world's largest silver-copper producer. The work involves making substantial amounts of information clear, accessible and easy to navigate.

  2. 02

    Lane Eight Coffee

Design and creative direction across social media, posters and other brand materials. An opportunity to develop a recognisable visual language through ongoing work.

  3. 03

    Invoyisi

Our in-house invoicing platform. You'll help design the product as we launch and grow it in 2027, working on features and improving the experience as we learn from the people using it.

  4. 04

    Our Enterprise Partnership with Lovable

Rapid prototypes for client enquiries. You'll take an initial brief, work out a useful direction and build something the client can explore and respond to.

What we're looking for

  1. 01A portfolio showing strong brand and visual design, with particular attention to typography, layout and hierarchy.
  2. 02Experience designing user flows, navigation, interfaces and reusable components.
  3. 03An understanding of brand and the ability to carry it through different formats, consistently.
  4. 04Confidence working in Adobe Illustrator and a willingness to work extensively in Lovable. Experience with Framer would be useful.
  5. 05An interest in new tools and ways of working, including AI, with the judgement to assess and improve the results.
  6. 06The ability to explain your decisions, work independently and discuss work openly while it is still developing.

We care more about your work, judgement and willingness to learn on new platforms than a particular number of years in the industry.

Location

WeWork

Cathedral works from WeWork, and the role includes a WeWork All Access membership. The role can be remote, but preference will be given to candidates based in Johannesburg.

Hours

Some of our clients are based in Canada and the USA, so on certain days you will work hours outside the standard South African time zone. These hours are factored into a standard working day, and you will receive a monthly timetable showing which days you will work to support clients in other time zones.

Salary

Market-related, based on experience. We welcome applications from junior to mid-level designers who match the position and want to grow into the role.

Working at Cathedral

You'll have responsibility for your work and room to influence how we approach projects. Ideas are welcome, including better ways to do things we already do.

We value people who share what they know, ask for help when they need it and give useful, considered feedback. You should be comfortable trying something unfamiliar and revising an approach when it isn't working.

Alongside the variety of client work, our own products offer the chance to stay involved beyond launch—to see how people use what you've designed and make it better over time.

Apply

Send your portfolio and a short introduction.

We'd like to see finished work, but also enough of the process to understand your contribution and the decisions you made.
